What is Take Stock in College?

Take Stock in Children recently launched a new program, Take Stock in College, designed to improve the college completion rate of its more than 6,000 students attending a Florida college or university. Currently, the college completion rate of TSIC students totals 67 percent, which is five times higher than that of peers nationally facing similar challenges and barriers to post-secondary success. The goal of the program is to increase that number to 95 percent by bridging the gap between high school and career with targeted personnel and improved on-campus resources and supports. College attainment is the key to ensuring more students make it out of poverty and through Take Stock in College, the organization is proactively putting our resources to work to increase our college completion rate to mirror our high school success rates.

Goal to reach-01
Take Stock in College provides three levels of post-secondary support to ensure college retention and completion rates increase:

  • TSIC has leveraged its local affiliate organizations to scale established best practices from high school to college through a specific mini-grant program. This will continue to create linkages for Take Stock students between trusted, local staff and their new college support network.
  • A student ambassador has been placed at every one of Florida’s 40 state colleges and universities. This individual will be a full-time student at the given institution and serve as a peer mentor, providing a first line of immediate contact and support for other TSIC students.
  • A network of college completion coaches provides robust, professional services to complement student ambassadors’ peer-level support. The coaches will be assigned to a specific group of public colleges and universities and will be overseen by a project director to ensure the program is being implemented consistently across Florida.

For nearly 25 years, TSIC has created a community of mentors and supports for our middle and high school students to put them on a successful path to college. Take Stock in College is a further example of our commitment to ensuring our hardworking students have the resources they need to succeed and foster their ability to forge a new trail that prepares them for success during and after college.
