Take Stock in College and Career scholar Jaiwan Hutchinson with Associate Director Gigi Graves

Collaboration leads to student success: Jaiwan Hutchinson

At Take Stock in Children, we are constantly inspired by the stories of growth, resilience, and success that unfold within our network. We are proud to share the story of Jaiwan Hutchinson, a Take Stock St. Johns County program grad who has overcome challenges and continued to excel academically and personally.

Jaiwan’s journey with our program began in middle school at Gamble Rogers, where the student was paired with a dedicated mentor, Mr. Dalahay. Over the years, Jaiwan thrived under Mr. Dalahay’s guidance, and together, they navigated the highs and lows of education, personal growth, and life beyond the classroom. With consistent support and mentorship, Jaiwan graduated from Pedro Menendez High School in St. Augustine in 2022 with Magna Cum Laude honors, a testament to the scholar’s hard work and determination.

With the help of the Take Stock in Children scholarship, Jaiwan was able to take the next big step: college. Now attending the University of North Florida (UNF), Jaiwan is on the pathway to academic success.

While Jaiwan’s tuition scholarship from Take Stock in Children was an invaluable resource during the first years of college, it unfortunately only covered the tuition portion of the scholar’s expenses. Like many students, Jaiwan faced unexpected financial challenges, mainly from the costs of housing and dorm fees, textbooks, and food. With financial concerns mounting, Jaiwan had to take out student loans, but even those weren’t enough to fully support the student’s needs. This is a reality many college students face, and it highlights the importance of continued support and resources for those pursuing higher education.

Despite these obstacles, Jaiwan’s perseverance and determination to succeed never wavered. Jaiwan called Gigi Graves, the Take Stock in College and Career Associate Director, for guidance. Gigi began working with Jaiwan in 2023, offering advice and support as the scholar navigated these challenges. Thanks to Gigi’s expertise and productive collaboration, Jaiwan has overcome several hurdles.

One of Jaiwan’s biggest wins came in 2024 when the student applied for and secured a Resident Assistant (RA) position at school. This opportunity provided Jaiwan with a housing solution and alleviated a significant portion of the scholar’s financial strain. Additionally, Jaiwan sought out other grants and saved money by working part-time.

Thanks to the continued mentorship, advice, and determination of both Take Stock mentors, Mr. Dalahay and Gigi Graves, Jaiwan is now in a much stronger financial position as the scholar continues the college journey. Jaiwan’s story is a powerful reminder of the importance of mentorship and its role in helping students navigate the complexities of higher education, financial challenges, and life beyond graduation.

Jaiwan’s resilience, hard work, and commitment to education inspire us all. We are so proud of Jaiwan’s accomplishments so far, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for this Take Stock in College and Career scholar!
