Mercinda Cabrera, is a standout student of the Take Stock in Children program operated by the Public Education Foundation of Marion County. With an impressive 3.98 GPA, the graduating senior is not only excelling academically but also making a mark as a leader in her school and community.
Mercinda balances time as a dually enrolled scholar at the College of Central Florida with a host of extracurricular activities, including the Marching Band, Concert Band, Jazz Band, and the Speech and Debate Club. In addition, Mercinda serves as the President of the National Honor Society at Lake Weir High School, demonstrating strong leadership skills and dedication to service.
Passion for Music and Education
Mercinda’s love for music runs deep. As she describes, “Music is the ultimate connection in a divided and angry world,” and it’s clear her passion transcends beyond just the notes and rhythms of her instrument. Her involvement in band has instilled in her a sense of purpose far greater than herself.
Throughout high school, Mercinda has been honored with numerous awards in music and debate, including accolades from her Debate Club as early as her 9th-grade year. But her greatest aspiration lies in music education. She’s determined to pursue a music education doctorate to help shape future generations.
Mercinda is passionate about the role music plays in developing well-rounded individuals. She notes, “Attributes of musicians create great people,” and believes that fostering musical talent in students will not only help them in their careers as doctors, lawyers, or scientists but also provide them with the persistence needed to define and achieve their dreams. Research supports her belief: music majors represent the highest percentage of accepted medical students, at 66%.
Looking Ahead to Florida State University
Mercinda’s journey is far from over. This fall, she will attend Florida State University, where she plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in General Music Education. She is eager to take the next step in her journey, fueled by her determination to contribute positively to the world.
She is also looking forward to the Leaders 4 Life Fellowship, which she believes will help her give back the same selflessness and leadership she has experienced throughout her life. As Mercinda says, “I’m determined to do this through music education, and I will not let my new beginnings be an obstacle, but an opportunity to learn things about being a leader that I had never even considered.”
