Before You Move In…

Where has summer gone? School starts in just a few weeks and it is time to get your ducks in a row. Before classes start, it is important to get all your paperwork and packing together. We’ve provided a checklist of reminders below. Make sure you get all these taken care of and do not hesitate to reach out to your College Completion Coach if you have any problems.

If you have multiple scholarships, prioritize your scholarships.

Your Take Stock Florida Prepaid Scholarship only pays for tuition. Thus if you have multiple scholarships you should reach out to your campus financial aid and make sure the bursar draws from your Florida Prepaid Account first.

Double-check that you have turned in all paperwork

Refer to any new-student checklists on your college/university websites, and check in to your student portal leading up to the first day of class.

Register for classes

Your academic advising team at your college is the key office to visit if you are unsure about which classes to take. Check out our more detailed post on registering for classes. With the right preparation, you can build the perfect schedule!

Avoid parking tickets

If you have a personal vehicle, look into parking decals on your campus website or your student portal. You don’t want a parking ticket to ruin your first day of class.

If you are moving from home to attend college…

As you start packing it is important to remember that furnishing a college dorm room can be expensive. Consider buying items second hand from thrift shops or your College Completion Coach can help connect you with community resources that supply back to school items. It is important to prioritize the things you need for your dorm over the things you want. You need sheets and a phone charger; you can pass on a funky rug that ties the room together. That said, this is going to be your home for the next year; make it comfortable. Don’t hesitate to bring a select few items that can make your dorm into a home: photos, personal mementos, or wall décor.

Be sure you are aware of what the school provides and prohibits. For instance, you likely don’t need a mattress or a desk, and most dorms won’t allow students to light candles. Save your money by doing your research!

Make a plan for move-in day

If you don’t have a personal vehicle, can you borrow a car from a family member or a friend? Are you bringing anything big? If so, make sure you have someone who can help you move in!

Reach out to your roommate

If you are living in the dorms or with other students, coordinate your belongings. You don’t want to bring two of everything and you can save money by sharing.

If you live on-campus, get all required vaccinations and paperwork

Consider visiting your county Department of Health, Costco, Target, and CVS Minute Clinic to get vaccinations at affordable prices.

Remember, the first step to success is preparation

So… let’s start tackling our to-do list! As always, your College Completion Coaches are here for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you are having any difficulties.
