Take Stock Seminole recently held a special event to show our deep gratitude for the amazing mentors who make a difference in the lives of their students—the Thanks 4 Giving Mentor Appreciation Happy Hour. This event was an opportunity to thank mentors not only for their dedication but for their invaluable guidance and encouragement that helps shape the futures of the young people in our program.
The evening was filled with camaraderie as mentors gathered to share stories and discuss new ways to better connect with their students. It was a reminder of the power of mentorship and the importance of having a strong, supportive network. Events like these foster a sense of community and connection, allowing our mentors to feel appreciated and engaged with the Take Stock in Children of Seminole County program.
A highlight of the evening was the announcement of their Mentor of the Year, Ms. Cheryl Blakeney. Cheryl’s commitment to the Take Stock in Seminole program spans an impressive 23 years, and has mentored nine students! Cheryl’s heart for service and unwavering dedication make this mentor a true role model within our community.
Cheryl also served on the Take Stock in Seminole Programs Committee and participated in the Student Interview Recruitment Panel, helping to bring new students and mentors into the program. Known for having a welcoming smile and calming presence, Cheryl has a unique ability to make nervous 8th-grade students feel at ease during their interviews, a critical first step in their Take Stock Seminole journey.
In addition to mentoring current students, Cheryl continues to support past mentees, attending their college graduations and celebrating their successes as they become productive members of our community. Cheryl’s current mentee, Alyana, shared this with us: “Ms. Cheryl is a beautiful, heartwarming lady who does her best to make sure I’m cared for and supported.”
During the event, Cheryl was presented with a variety of thoughtful gifts, including balloons, flowers, a clock, and a copy of the book “If the Whole World Could Know You.” This book resonated deeply with Cheryl, as the words on one page perfectly describe the mentor: “If the whole world could know you, they’d know what it’s like to feel uplifted by your generous and overflowing heart.”
“Cheryl’s dedication is a shining example of the transformative power of mentorship,” shared Shannon Rininger, Program Supervisor for Take Stock Seminole. “We are incredibly fortunate to have Cheryl as part of the Take Stock Seminole family, and we look forward to continuing to celebrate our Mentor of the Year’s contributions to the program for many years to come.”
Thank you, Cheryl, and to all of our mentors, for the big difference you make in the lives of our students!
